Library
Purpose
The purpose of the library is to serve Valley Christian School by providing a quality collection of reading and information sources, to function as a study and research center, and to support classroom instruction with adequate resources.
The Collection
The collection consists of fiction, non-fiction, biography, reference, video, and DVD titles appropriate for ages five through adult. The materials are housed in separate elementary and secondary locations and classified according to the Dewey Decimal System using Alexandria v5.5.2. Elementary students can use two computer research stations at any time to search for library books by title, subject, author, or key word. One research stations with the same capabilities has been promised to the secondary library.
General Operation
The librarian manages the library and established policy with administrative approval. Open hours are 8:30 to 3:10 on school days. The library is open even when the librarian is not present and is available for classroom use based on availability. Funding is through the school. Students can check out books at any time by recording student’s name, book name, and barcode number on the check out sheet.
Loan Policy
All associated with Valley Christian School may borrow library materials once his or her name has been entered in the Alexandria v5.5.2 system. (All students and faculty are automatically entered into the system in the fall.) The loan period is four weeks, but overdue books are not fined unless lost. Lost books are charged $20.00 or the current replacement cost for replacement.
Donations
All donations become the property of Valley Christian School library. These items are screened, especially those for younger children, for immorality, witchcraft, anti-Christian bias, rebellion towards parents and authority, and evolution; however, nearly all encyclopedia sets and science books contain evolutionary bias. Some fiction contains occasional objectionable passages. Complaints are handled individually.
Core Reading List
Valley Christian School requires students in grades 3-12 to read one book per quarter from the core list.
